Opening Traditional Stone Collection from 3 Quarries demanded

Abdur Razzak, Sylhet Correspondent Sylhet, Jan. 12: The quarries of Jafloong, Bichanakandi and Bholagonj in Sylhet District has been closed since 1st August, 2016, following an order signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Shirin Sultana, Ministry of Oil Gas and Mineral resources affairs. For this unprecedented order of closure, the quarries have been forced closed resulting in over 5 lakh quarry labourers went out of jobs working at those quarries. Moreover, more than one lakh transport workers and their helpers became unemployed in Sylhet District. Stones, being supplied from Sylhet, to be used in at the rest of the country including even on-going construction of The Padma Bridge has also been retarded. The buzzing of quarry labourers, transport workers, helpers and stone traders who made the three quarries’ areas full of business throughout the day, halted with the said ministry order.
